Over 100 friends of Cabrillo EDC attended the celebration. Our CEO, Margarita H. de Escontrias started the program with the following: “Groundbreakings have been a tradition for thousands of years in different parts of the globe, in many traditions, breaking the Earth was never done without an ofrenda. There is a ceremony done to break the Earth, to prepare the land. We’re making a sacred deposit. … What is our ofrenda? Affordable housing for farmworkers, and for veterans in our community.”
Our guest of honor, Dolores Huerta, spoke on the important history of farm workers and the struggles she and Cesar Chavez helped them overcome. "We have so many people that are homeless and many people that live on the street. So, when we see what's happening here today with all of you and CEDC I think it's amazing!"
Speakers at the event included: Lourdes Castro Ramirez, Secretary of the California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency; Jennifer Seeger, Deputy Director of State Financial Assistance, California Housing and Community Development; Vianey Lopez, Ventura County Board of Supervisors District 5 and Gabby Basua, Oxnard City Council District 5. Our Master of Ceremonies was our friend David Cruz. David is a Media and Marketing Communications Consultant with an extensive background as a broadcast network journalist and commentator in the American landscape. Many of us remember him from NBC TV in Los Angeles.
Thank you to all that participated! We want to give special thanks to PODS Containers for the use of their Plexi POD and to Ventura Water Store for donating the bottled water.
