Calling All Artists! The Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation’s 40th Anniversary Mural Competition is now underway!!
Theme of Cabrillo EDC’s 40 Years of Home Mural
The theme of the anniversary celebration is Cabrillo EDC’s 40 Years of Home. The mural will celebratethe many facets of Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation’s history and origin story as well as Cabrillo EDC’s roots working with farmworkers and farmworker housing. The artwork should also show the importance of “essential workers” as people Cabrillo EDC serves and their role in the community and a positive message about Cabrillo EDC’s vision and values. For the past 40 years, Cabrillo EDC has held the belief that every person has the right to decent, safe and affordable housing. As such, our values are grounded in the development of ownership and rental housing that provides the foundation for people to improve their lives. The purpose of the mural is to promote awareness about the importance of developing housing that positively impacts the community’s health, education, public safety, social services and economic development – And Cabrillo EDC’s contributions over the past 40 years.
The winning artist may be given feedback by the selection committee while in the completion process. Therefore, applicants MUST be willing to alter their design based on recommendations from the committee. The finished mural art will be used on Anniversary posters, postcards and for advertising and branding purposes. Therefore, the art should be both visually appealing as well as attention-grabbing, and the artist and committee will work together to achieve this goal.
Application Guidelines:
- Submit one to two sketches or mock-ups of your entry. It does not need to be a finished piece but should be representative of what you intend to create.
- Submit at least three other samples of your work, which are indicative of your distinct ‘style’. You may submit a link to your website in lieu of three examples if you wish.
- Submit an artist bio and an artist statement about your entry. If you have a particular connection to Cabrillo EDC’s mission and vision, please describe it.
- Include complete contact information, including address, phone, and email.
Mural Specifications:
- The overall dimensions are 15.75 feet by 16.5 feet (259.87 sq. ft.) with up to an additional 200 sq. ft. available. See photos 1 and 2 at the end of this document.
- The Mural location is the stairwell entrance to Cabrillo EDC’s Corporate Offices located at 702 County Square Drive, Suite 200 Ventura, CA 93003. The surface is CMU block wall that is concave and is currently painted. There is natural light and existing light fixtures in the stairwell. Artists wishing to inspect the Mural location are encouraged to contact us in advance as office hours are still impacted by Covid-19 protocols.
How to Enter:
Digital images can be sent electronically to [email protected]. Digital files should be standard 300 DPI and in a file format of one of the following: JPG, PDF, EPS.

Deadlines and Terms of Participation:
Completed application materials (sketch, samples, artist bio and statement and contact info) and the proposed mural design must be received no later than 5:00 pm PST on Monday, December 6, 2021. The winning artist will be announced by Monday, January 3, 2022.
The winning artist’s name and website will be included on the Mural, listed on www.cabrilloedc.org and on any marketing materials which feature the winning artist’s work. The winning artist will also receive
$7,500 cash prize. Please Note: the final piece of original artwork and all rights to use the artwork will become property of Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation.
The Mural will be installed and on display at the Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation Main Office at 702 County Square Drive, Ventura, CA 93003.

Founded in 1981, Cabrillo EDC’s early roots were in response to a farmworker community’s demand for secure housing. Recognized as a leader in affordable housing statewide and nationally, we have worked to contribute to positive and sustainable change in the region and improve the quality of life for thousands of residents by providing affordable home communities, resources, social opportunities and educational programs. These programs include homework clubs, adult empowerment, nutrition and fitness, and youth leadership development.
Please review all of the submission rules and requirements below carefully. Failure to adhere to any one of these rules and requirements may result in your submission being disqualified from the jurying process.
Eligibility/ Specifications
Cabrillo EDC’s 40 Years Of Home Mural, call to artistsis open to all artists over the age of 18 working in mural art that in some way draws its inspiration from our affordable housing and farmworker roots. That inspiration may include (but is not limited to) depictions of community, affordable housing, landscape, farmworkers and farmworker housing, essential workers, medical, first responders, teachers…, and our 40-year history.
All types of mural designs will be considered. Art that in a more abstract way deals with issues and ideas related to affordable housing and the community we serve will also be considered. Only original work created for this project will be eligible. Artists may enter a maximum of 2 works for consideration.
Jurors
Works for this Mural will be selected by a panel of the Cabrillo EDCs staff.
All entries will be reviewed for artistic interpretation of Cabrillo EDC 40 Years of Home history, community representation and importance of affordable housing for our communities we serve. Jurors will apply a multi-point system for review and voting.
Use of Art for Publicity
Submission of a digital image by an artist constitutes agreement for the Cabrillo EDC to reproduce that image for publicity, website, social media, and educational purposes unless otherwise specified by the artist.
Liability
The selected artist will be required to execute a Consultant Services Agreement (see attached document)
Calendar of Important Dates
Monday, December 6, 2021. Deadline for receipt of Entry Form, digital images, artist’s bio, and any interpretative text(s).
Monday, January 3, 2022. Notification of selected artists’ work.
Monday, January 24, 2022: Artists begins the mural installation
Friday, March 18, 2022. Mural completion date.
