Cabrillo Village, Ventura. 1977-1986The Cabrillo Cooperative Housing Corporation owns and manages this 160 unit farm worker self help neighborhood development. The project began in 1976 and included the major rehabilitation of 86 homes and new construction of 74 units. Cabrillo Village is a former farm labor camp, which the residents purchased in 1976 and own as a housing cooperative. This project received a design award from TIME magazine in January 1983 for the 35 unit first phase of new housing and was a semifinalist for the Rudy Bruner Award for Excellence in the Urban Environment in 1989. The Campaign for Human Development selected Cabrillo Village as a model community economic project for the decade of the 70's because of its mix of housing; community economic development ventures, including a tile shop, cooperative store, and cabinet business; child care; and social services. CEDC is an outgrowth of this national model. Return to List of CEDC's Development Projects. |
